MPower's benefits * Supports a media enriched communications environment for real- time information sharing among dispersed teams. * The client-server configuration provides optimum use of system resources, support for smaller client desktop systems, and single- point system administration. * The power of the HP/Apollo PA-RISC systems makes information sharing through MPower cost-effective at any price point. Server Media Options' List prices: #APH HP-UX 9.0 N/C #OD1 Factory installed and integrated N/C #AAU CD-ROM Certificate N/C #AAH Media on DAT Tape $205 There must be at least 1 installation of MPower server software at your customer site in order for MPower to function properly. The suggested ratio of client systems to servers is six to twelve client systems to one server. A client system can be any Series 700 workstation; X stations, personal computers supporting MIT's X window system, or other workstations that support the X window system may participate within the MPower environment. Target Customers Here are guidelines to follow when looking for an MPower prospect: Look for: * Workgroups and teams who use UNIX workstations to get their job done and who must communicate information quickly and easily, no matter what format the information is stored as. * Team members who need an intuitive user environment to communicate to other team members. Who is not an MPower prospect: * Standalone computer users who do not need interaction with other groups to get their job done. * Networked systems that do not support the MIT's X window system. A client system must be running X windows to use MPower from an HP- UX server. Competition: The good news is that no other workstation competitor has an environment that comes close to the feature performance of MPower. Our competitors rely on third party products to complete their multimedia offerings; those same third party products are often available on HP's workstations too. Here's a quick update on competitive offerings: Sun: Sun supports multimedia functionality within the Solaris operating system and from third party vendors. Deskset, available on Solaris 2.0, offers multimedia mail, an audio tool, a print tool, a file manager, a workgroup calendar, and help. Sun's multimedia strengths are: * A large number of third party products * Multimedia mail bundled with their operating system * Good development tools Here are a few sell-arounds to neutralize these strengths: * MPower components are fully integrated; Sun's are not. * Multimedia components, outside of audio, must be purchased from third parties - no guarantee that they will all work together. * Sun systems will be harder to upgrade because of the reliance on unintegrated third party solutions. * Sun systems do not have a SharedX product for realtime collaboration. DEC: DEC announced a multimedia program in 1992, but has disbanded the group responsible for implementation. Available from DEC today are: * Video conference capability through DECspin * Solid development tools from DECimage Application Services * Good scanning solution in DECimage Scan Software Here are some neutralizers against DEC * No fully integrated, graphical desktop * Focused more to a developer's program instead of an end-user solution. * No evidence of future development * DEC systems do not have a SharedX product for realtime collaboration. IBM IBM's multimedia strengths are on the PC platform and relies on third parties to fulfill multimedia capabilities on the workstation. Their strengths on the DOS platform are: * Single source ordering point from IBM * Multimedia capabilities built into Multimedia Presentation Manager * Video is bundled on higher-end IBM personal computers Here are some sell arounds for IBM: * Still a PC only solution, typically not distributed so you do not receive the sharing functions MPower provides * The IBM PC solution is based on OS/2 and Presentation Manager and there are more Microsoft Window based third-party products than OS/2 based ones. * IBM PCs do not have a SharedX product for realtime collaboration. SGI SGI has a strong multimedia position if your customer's objective is to build their own systems through multimedia authoring tools They also bundle solid multimedia tools with Indigo Magic which provides basic production capabilities for audio, video and image. Here are sell arounds for SGI: * There are no sharing functions such as SharedX and Shared Whiteboard available. * All Indigo systems are not necessarily networkable. * Limited third party options to build more multimedia solutions.
